Heavy rain turned parts of Scottsdale and Mesa into the kind of place where a road looks less like a road and more like a bad idea with lane markings. Officials warned drivers after sudden downpours flooded streets and left cars stranded in standing water.
According to the report, rescue crews responded after flooding hit a Loop 101 on-ramp in Scottsdale near Pima Road and Princess Drive, and near Higley Road in Mesa. The Arizona Department of Public Safety and Scottsdale Fire were among the crews called to vehicles stuck in water reported as deep as 2 feet.
The message from safety officials was simple: don’t drive through floodwaters, and pay attention to road closures and barricades. That advice tends to sound obvious right up until someone decides their sedan is apparently part amphibian.
In a Valley storm, the smartest move is still the least dramatic one: turn around before the water does it for you.
