Researchers in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley have landed a combined $5.3 million in National Institutes of Health grants, with projects aimed at understanding how the body responds to stress and exercise.

The University of Arkansas and Arkansas Colleges of Health Education in Fort Smith recently announced the awards. Together, the grants point to a familiar wellness question with real-world stakes: why do people and cells respond so differently to the same stressors, and why do similar exercise programs lead to different outcomes for different people?

At the University of Arkansas, Jeffrey Lewis, an associate professor of biological sciences, received a $2 million NIH grant to study how cells vary in their responses to stress. His lab looks at the coordination and logic of stress-responsive regulatory networks, along with the genes that help cells maintain homeostasis. Lewis also studies how individuals perceive and respond to stress, using yeast as a model organism to explore genetic factors behind those differences.

The award runs for five years and is part of the NIH's Maximizing Investigators' Research Award, which is sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. According to the university release, the funding will largely support additional research staff and graduate students, along with access to specialized equipment.

Lewis said the work could deepen understanding of conditions tied to abnormal stress responses, including heart disease, Parkinson's disease and cancer.
