A dust storm rolled across the Valley Sunday night, and KTAR reported that the warning covered most of the area from Avondale to Mesa and much of north Phoenix through 9:30 p.m.
The National Weather Service said visibility could drop to near zero as storms moved northwest from the Pinal County area after the system had been above Tucson earlier in the day, according to KTAR. That kind of setup is a familiar reminder of how quickly monsoon weather can turn from distant to immediate here in the Phoenix area.
KTAR also quoted the weather service saying outflow was continuing to surge northwest into the Phoenix East Valley, with strong wind gusts in excess of 30 to 40 mph and blowing dust, plus the chance for additional storms to form behind the outflow. For anyone watching the sky from home, that’s the sort of forecast that keeps you checking the horizon and the latest updates.
By 9 p.m. Sunday, KTAR reported the Valley had not yet received any measurable rain. The dust storm came during an extreme heat warning that began Aug. 17 and was expected to last until Aug. 28, adding another layer to an already rough stretch of weather for the region.
