Arizona football is done with training camp, and the timing feels about right for a team ready to stop talking about practice and start finding out what it really has.

According to Arizona Desert Swarm, the Wildcats wrapped up their final training camp practice on Thursday night after a massive monsoon caused flooding around campus and briefly knocked out power in the football offices. By the time Brent Brennan spoke with reporters, it was after 10 p.m. That late-night finish fits the mood of this stretch of the calendar: camp is one thing, but the opener is where the answers start showing up.

Brennan said he’s eager to see the team in action. As Arizona Desert Swarm quoted him, “Practice is practice, games are games. We need to find out who looks ... who can do it for real when the lights are on.” That’s the kind of line that lands because it’s true for just about every team this time of year, but especially for one that has spent August sorting through roles and building toward September.

The Wildcats still have one more practice inside Casino Del Sol Stadium on Saturday night, which Brennan described as the tail end of a “mock week” before the program shifts into official game week mode on Sunday, according to the same report. That setup matters because Arizona is trying to make the transition as smooth as possible for a roster with 50 new guys who haven’t been through a game week with this program before.

There’s also a practical side to all of this. Arizona Desert Swarm reported that the UA went heavy on scheme through 18 workouts, helped by the number of returners and the fact that most newcomers were already on campus for spring practice. Brennan said the goal was to make the week feel exactly like a game week so players could see what it looks and feels like before the real thing arrives.

And the real thing is close. Arizona opens Sept. 5 at 6:30 p.m. PT against NAU, while NAU has its opener Saturday afternoon in Flagstaff against Eastern Washington, per Arizona Desert Swarm. Most starting positions are set for the first game, and players headed to the scout team have already been told. That means the Wildcats are past the point of wondering what camp might become. Now it’s about seeing what carries over when the lights are on.
